Reading with Your Student
Good morning,
We talk a lot about reading and the importance. But, what makes a good read aloud?
https://www.raisesmartkid.com/all-ages/1-articles/52-reading-to-children-how-tos-and-tips
Here is a great article to read if you have time. If not, here are a few things I picked up.
BEFORE YOU READ:
1. Pick a comfortable place to sit or relax.
2. Make sure everyone can see the pages.
3. Create excitement (allow a child to pick their favorite book or you pick one and say what made it look interesting to you)
4. Notice details on the cover that are intriguing.
5. Talk about what they already know (Ex. This book is about monkeys. What do you know about monkeys?)
WHILE YOU READ:
1. Make your voice match the mood or feeling of the character. Slow down to build suspense.
2. Can you give the characters voices?
3. Notice facial expressions on the characters after you read a page.
4. Ask kids for a prediction before you turn the page "What do you think will happen next?"
5. Stop and discuss the pictures. Ask your child to find details. They will find things you missed!
AFTER YOU READ:
1. Ask simple questions: Who were the main characters (the STARS of the story?)
2. How did this character change? (In the beginning they were sad, but they found the lost dog and were happy at the end)
3. Where did the story take place? (A desert? a zoo? A house? the woods?)
4. What was the problem in the story? How did it get fixed?
EXTEND the learning.
1. See if your child wants to draw a picture of their favorite part. Write down what they say.
2. Retell the story (take turns retelling in your own words.
3. Act if out (Read the three little pigs. Allow someone to act out the different pigs and someone is the big bad wolf. Maybe they will even want to make wolf ears/pig ears!) Maybe a box or the couch is the house. Have fun. Let the kids come up with ideas.
4. Can you rewrite/retell the story? This time put your names in the story.
